Wool Rugs vs Synthetic Rugs: Which Is Right for Your Sydney Home?
Walk into any rug showroom and one of the first questions you will face is the material. Wool and synthetic fibres such as polypropylene and polyester can look similar from a distance, but they behave very differently underfoot and over the years. Here is how to decide.
Wool: the natural choice
Wool has been used in carpets and rugs for centuries. The fibre is naturally springy, so it bounces back after furniture and footsteps, and it takes dye well, which is why wool rugs often have deep, rich colours.
- Feel: soft and warm, with a natural, slightly dense texture.
- Durability: excellent, and a good wool rug can last many years with care.
- Stain response: wool repels some liquids at first, but it can stain, so blot spills quickly.
- Shedding: new wool rugs shed loose fibres for the first few weeks. This is normal and settles down with regular vacuuming.
Synthetic: the practical choice
Synthetic rugs are made from man-made fibres and tend to be more affordable. They are usually easy to clean, do not shed like wool and come in a huge range of patterns and colours, including soft shaggy styles.
- Price: generally lower than wool for the same size.
- Cleaning: many synthetic fibres tolerate spot cleaning well.
- Lifespan: good, but the pile can flatten in high-traffic areas sooner than wool.
Which fits which room?
- Living room: wool or a wool blend for comfort and longevity.
- Dining area: a synthetic, low-pile rug is easier to clean after spills and lets chairs slide.
- Bedroom: a soft wool or shaggy rug feels great under bare feet.
- Entry and hallway: a durable synthetic runner handles shoes and grit.
Sizing tips
In a living room, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. Common sizes are 160 x 230 cm for compact rooms, 200 x 290 cm for standard lounges and 240 x 340 cm for larger open-plan spaces. Under a dining table, leave about 60 cm beyond the table edge on every side.
Care basics
- Vacuum regularly, and turn the rug occasionally so it wears evenly.
- Use a non-slip underlay, especially on tiles or timber floors.
- Blot spills, do not rub, and use a cleaner that is suitable for the fibre.
