Queen Bedroom Suites in Sydney: What to Look for in a Bed, Bedsides and Tallboy Set
A bedroom suite, usually a bed, two bedside tables and often a tallboy or dresser, is one of the easiest ways to furnish a bedroom in one go. Queen is the most popular size in Sydney, and buyers often search for a queen bedroom suite because the matching finish makes the room look finished straight away. Use this guide to choose well.
1. Check your room size
A queen mattress is 153 cm wide and 203 cm long, but the bed frame adds more. Allow roughly 160 to 170 cm of width and 210 to 220 cm of length for the frame, depending on the headboard. You then need at least 60 cm of walking space on each side and the foot of the bed. A room of about 3.0 x 3.2 m is a comfortable minimum for a queen bed with two bedsides. If you also want a tallboy, aim for a bigger room or choose a slim model. Our bed and mattress size guide covers the exact measurements for every size.
2. Pick the bed frame style
- Upholstered headboards: comfortable for reading in bed, and available in grey, charcoal and neutral fabrics.
- Timber-look or panelled headboards: hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean, with oak, black and graphite finishes.
- Gas-lift storage bases: useful in smaller homes and apartments where wardrobe space is limited.
Browse our queen bed collection to compare these styles. If you are thinking of upsizing later, the king bed range follows many of the same designs.
3. Think about storage
Most suites include two bedside tables with drawers. A tallboy adds five or six extra drawers without taking much floor space, while a dressing table adds a seat and mirror if you want a getting-ready spot. Check drawer runners and soft-close features, because these are used daily. Our tallboy and dressing table guide goes into detail.
4. Choose a finish that suits the room
Dark finishes such as matt black or graphite look dramatic but need a lighter rug and soft lighting to avoid heaviness. Oak and warm timber tones feel relaxed and hide scratches more easily. Grey suits both modern and coastal styles and works with most bed linen colours.
5. Do not forget the mattress
A new bed deserves a good mattress. Medium-firm is the most common choice for couples with different sleeping positions. Compare options in our mattress range, and check the base is compatible with your chosen frame.
6. Finish with a rug
A rug anchors the bed and makes the floor warmer in winter. Place it so it extends 50 to 60 cm beyond each side of the bed and at the foot. A 1.6 x 2.3 m rug suits many queen bedrooms, while 2.0 x 3.0 m gives a generous look.
