Turkish-Style Rugs in Sydney: Choosing a Marmaris or Modern Area Rug for Your Floors
Turkish rugs are consistently among the most searched rug styles in Sydney. Shoppers love the rich detail and the way a well-chosen design can warm a room. Turkish weaving is a centuries-old craft, and Turkish carpets are known for the symmetrical Turkish knot. Many contemporary rugs inspired by that tradition, like our Marmaris range, translate those patterns into practical, modern pieces for everyday homes. Here is how to choose.
Traditional versus modern Turkish-style designs
Traditional designs use medallions, florals and detailed borders. They suit formal living rooms and dining areas. Modern Turkish-style designs simplify the pattern into abstract shapes, distressed vintage effects or geometric lines in grey, gold, beige and charcoal. These work well with contemporary sofas and neutral walls. Compare both looks in our Marmaris collection, modern rugs and Persian rugs.
Which size should you buy?
- Living room: 2.0 x 3.0 m suits most rooms; choose 2.4 x 3.4 m if your sofa is large or the room is open plan.
- Dining room: make sure the rug extends at least 60 cm beyond the table so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
- Bedroom: a rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, extending 50 to 60 cm at the sides.
- Hallway: a runner 80 cm wide leaves a border of floor on each side in a standard hallway. See the hallway runner guide.
Colour and pattern choices
Grey and gold suit velvet sofas and brass lamps. Beige and cream suit lighter homes and coastal looks. Black and grey combinations hide marks and suit busy households. A busy pattern hides crumbs and pet hair far better than a plain rug, which makes patterned designs a smart pick for families.
Pile height and material
Machine-made Turkish-style rugs often use synthetic fibres such as polypropylene, which are stain resistant and easy to vacuum. Low to medium pile suits dining rooms and hallways, while higher pile feels softer in bedrooms. Our wool versus synthetic rug guide explains the trade-offs in detail.
Care tips
- Vacuum weekly without the beater bar on low-pile rugs.
- Blot spills straight away and avoid rubbing.
- Rotate the rug every six months to even out sun fade.
- Use a quality non-slip underlay, especially on timber or tiles.
Choose in person
Colour is the hardest thing to judge online. Visit our Lidcombe store or Marsden Park showroom to see rugs laid out in daylight, and bring a photo of your sofa or floor to help match tones.
