Round, Shaggy or Modern: How to Choose the Right Rug Style for a Contemporary Sydney Home

by Quality Rugs & Furniture Sydney 14 Sep 2026

Rug Style Is a Bigger Decision Than Rug Size

Most rug shopping advice starts and ends with measuring the floor. That matters, but in a contemporary Sydney home the shape and texture of a rug does more to set the tone of a room than almost any other single piece of furniture. A hard-edged rectangular rug under a glass dining table reads very differently to a soft round rug floating under a curved coffee table, even if both cover the same square metres. Before you measure anything, it is worth deciding which of the three rug families actually suits the room: round, shaggy, or modern flat and low-pile. This guide walks through each, and is a companion piece to our general rug buying guide, which covers Persian, Turkish and wool rugs in more depth if a traditional look is what you are after.

Round Rugs: Softening Sharp-Edged Rooms

Round rugs work best where the rest of the room is full of straight lines — a rectangular dining table, a boxy sectional, a rigid grid of downlights. Dropping a circular rug into that mix breaks up the geometry and gives the eye somewhere to rest. They are particularly effective in three situations common in Sydney homes:

  • Round dining tables. A round rug should extend roughly 60-70cm beyond the table edge on all sides, so that dining chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. For a 1.2m round table, look for a 2.2m round rug; for a 1.5m table, size up to 2.4-2.7m.
  • Reading nooks and bay windows. A 1.5-1.8m round rug under an armchair and side table defines a cosy zone without needing a wall to anchor it.
  • Kids' rooms and playrooms. Rounded edges have no corners to trip over, and a circular rug reads less formal, which suits a room that will be used for floor play.

The trade-off with round rugs is that they are harder to centre precisely under asymmetric furniture arrangements, and in a long, narrow living room they can leave awkward triangles of bare floor in the corners. In those layouts, a rectangular or runner-shaped rug will usually look more resolved. Our round rug collection includes both plain wool-look and patterned traditional designs in the sizes above.

Shaggy Rugs: Warmth and Texture First

Shag-pile rugs — long, loose pile that you can run your fingers through — are a texture decision more than a colour decision. Historically associated with 1970s interiors, the modern versions sold today are finer, denser and available in much more muted palettes, which is why they have come back into favour for bedrooms and media rooms. According to Wikipedia's overview of carpet construction, "the shag carpet, which was popular in the 1970s, is an example of knotted pile carpet" — the long pile traps air and sound, which is exactly why shaggy rugs feel warm underfoot and take the edge off hard flooring acoustically.

Shaggy rugs suit:

  • Bedrooms, placed either as a runner down each side of the bed or as a single large rug that the bed sits on the front third of.
  • Media and home theatre rooms, where the extra pile height dampens echo and adds a lounge-like feel.
  • Homes without small children or pets, or at least not in high-traffic zones — long pile flattens and sheds more under constant foot traffic and is harder to vacuum thoroughly than a low-pile weave.

One practical note for Sydney apartments: shaggy rugs hold onto moisture and dust longer than flat weaves, so they are a better fit for well-ventilated rooms than for a laundry-adjacent hallway or a rug that will regularly get wet feet from a nearby balcony door. Browse the full range in our shaggy rug collection, including deluxe, ultra and puffy-style pile options.

Modern Rugs: Low-Pile, Pattern-Led, Easy to Live With

"Modern rug" in our range refers to low or medium-pile rugs with contemporary abstract, geometric or tonal patterns, usually machine-woven or tufted rather than hand-knotted. Tufting has become the dominant method of rug and carpet manufacturing worldwide because it is faster and more consistent than hand-knotting — Wikipedia's entry on tufting notes that pile is "punched in rapid succession through a backing fabric" using a tufting gun, then finished with a latex backing, which is what gives modern tufted rugs their firmer, flatter feel compared to a shaggy pile.

Modern rugs are the most forgiving category for everyday Sydney living because they:

  • Sit low enough that doors, robe sliders and dining chairs clear them without catching.
  • Show less visible wear in high-traffic paths like hallways and in front of a sofa.
  • Come in large-format abstract patterns that hide the sun-fade Sydney's light causes over a few years better than a solid colour does.

They also layer well over existing carpet or floorboards without adding much height, which matters in rental properties where floor-to-door clearance is fixed. Our modern rug collection spans muted grey and anthracite tones through to warmer terracotta and gold accents, in runner, rectangular and round formats.

Matching Rug Texture to the Rest of the Room

Once you have chosen a family, check it against the two pieces of furniture the rug will sit closest to:

  • Coffee table material. A glass or marble-top coffee table looks sharper against a low-pile modern rug, where the table's front legs are clearly visible. A timber or upholstered coffee table can sit comfortably on a shaggy pile without looking unbalanced. See sizing and material pairings in our coffee table range.
  • Sofa fabric. Boucle, linen and other heavily textured sofas tend to compete with a shaggy rug for visual attention — pairing a textured sofa with a flatter modern or round rug usually reads calmer. A plain leather or velvet sofa can carry a busier or higher-pile rug without the room feeling too busy.

As a general rule, pick one "texture statement" per room. If the sofa is heavily textured, let the rug be simple. If the rug is the shaggy, high-pile statement piece, keep the sofa and coffee table cleaner-lined.

Care and Longevity by Rug Type

Maintenance requirements differ enough between the three styles that it is worth factoring in before you buy, not after:

  • Round rugs can usually be rotated 90-180 degrees every few months to even out sun fade and foot traffic wear, since the shape looks the same from any angle.
  • Shaggy rugs need a vacuum with adjustable pile height or a beater-bar-free setting to avoid pulling fibres; a professional shampoo every 12-18 months keeps the pile from matting.
  • Modern low-pile rugs are the easiest to spot-clean and can usually be vacuumed with a standard head weekly without damaging the weave.

See Them In Person

Photos flatten pile height and texture, which makes rugs one of the hardest categories to buy purely online. If you're deciding between a round, shaggy or modern rug, it's worth feeling the pile and checking the true colour under natural light before committing to a large-format piece.
